What makes an anniversary land

  • Agree on what you celebrate

In a Reddit thread on one- and two-month anniversaries, some couples marked 1, 3 and 6 months and then every year, while others found monthly dates too much. Say early which ones matter to you.

  • Give something to do

In experiments with real gift exchanges, experiences such as tickets or a class brought giver and receiver closer than objects did, even when they didn't use the gift together (Chan and Mogilner, 2017).

  • Tell your story again

In a study of 129 adults, recalling real moments from their relationship left people feeling warmer toward their partner than reading made-up stories did (Alea and Bluck, 2007).

  • Pick something new

Married couples who spent 90 minutes a week on exciting activities for 10 weeks gained more satisfaction than couples who did pleasant ones (Reissman, Aron and Bergen, 1993).

  • Repeat one small thing

Couples on Reddit keep small traditions: the same outfit as the day they got together, a photo in the same studio every year, racing to be the first to say happy monthsary.

  • Money is optional

Asked for ideas for a broke tenth anniversary, Reddit commenters suggested a picnic, letters to each other and recreating the first date at home.

Questions

What is a monthiversary?

The monthly anniversary of the day you got together. In the Philippines it's called a monthsary. Many couples mark the first few months and switch to once a year after that.

Should we celebrate every month?

There's no rule. A message or a slightly nicer dinner is enough for a month. Talk about it before the date, so you both expect the same thing.

What do you do for a 100-day anniversary?

Couples in Korea swap small gifts on day 100. A jar of 100 reasons, a letter to open at one year or a photo you'll repeat at every milestone also work. The love counter shows your exact 100th day.

What are cheap anniversary ideas?

A picnic with the food from your first date, letters to each other, a playlist of your songs, or a sunrise with coffee from home. Turn on the Free filter above to see only free ideas.

What is the traditional first anniversary gift?

Paper, in the US list of wedding anniversary gifts. Cotton is the second, leather the third and wood the fifth. Couples who aren't married often borrow the list for dating anniversaries too.

Is there an app that reminds couples of their anniversary?

Yes. Phorb, a couples app for iPhone, has a Countdown widget to your next anniversary, a Days Together widget for the Home Screen, Lock Screen and Apple Watch, and a shared calendar with reminders on both phones. It runs in 10 languages.

Do you save my shortlist?
