How to make date night happen

  • Make it regular

In the 2023 Date Night Opportunity survey, 83% of wives and 84% of husbands with regular date nights were very happy in their marriage, against 68% and 70% of those without. The survey shows a link and can't prove the dates caused it.

  • Pick something exciting

In a trial with 101 couples, a 4-week online program of exciting shared activities, about 90 minutes a week, raised excitement, positive feelings and satisfaction. Four months later those couples still scored higher than at the start.

  • Take turns deciding

In a Reddit thread about Friday nights lost to "you choose", one commenter said taking turns as the decider ended it, with no "I don't care" allowed.

  • A meh idea still helps

In the same thread, someone said a spin wheel of date ideas made them more honest: a meh result pushed them to say what they wanted.

  • Plan it a few days ahead

Across five experiments, people felt stronger emotions looking forward to an event than looking back on it. A date on the calendar gives you days to look forward to it.

  • Leave room to laugh

In a study of 71 couples, those who spent more of a conversation laughing together reported more closeness and support. Pick a silly idea now and then.

What are some free date ideas?

A sunset walk, a museum's free evening, stargazing, a board game tournament or a night planning your dream trip. Turn on the Free filter above to see only those.

What can long-distance couples do for date night?
