Questions to ask your girlfriend
48 questions for a relationship past the first dates, in six moods, one at a time. Each card has a follow-up for after she answers.
Which snack would you hide from me if we were snowed in?
Then ask: Where would you hide it?
How to ask so she feels heard
- 1
Check the timing first
Ask "Is now okay, or later?" before a heavy question. She may need quiet after a long day.
- 2
Listen before you solve
Ask whether she wants ideas or just someone to hear it. Then do that one.
- 3
Do something with the answer
If she says the week is heavy, take one job off her list without being asked.
Small things that help
Spot it before she has to
In 70 interviews with members of 35 couples, parents of young kids, Daminger (2019) found women did more of the household's mental work, above all anticipating what's needed. Notice one need before she does.
Say it to her face
One woman on r/AskWomen wished her partner would tell her to her face what he tells his friends about her. Tell her first.
Put the phone down
Reviewing the research, Itzchakov, Reis and Weinstein (2021) tie feeling understood by a partner to high-quality listening. Ask one more thing before you answer.
Let her skip one
"Not now" is a full answer. Leave that question alone and pick a lighter one another day.
Write the answers down
The Gottman Institute calls what you know about your partner's world a Love Map. Your notes app can hold her coffee order and that big deadline.
Go gently with the deep set
In Aron's 1997 study, pairs moved from small talk to deeper questions over 45 minutes. Start with a light card and let the talk get there.

Before you ask
What are good questions to ask your girlfriend?
Questions about her actual week, her past and the two of you, the kind that need more than one word. "What's on your plate that I can't see?" tells you more than "How was your day?", and the follow-up tells you what to do about it.
What are deep questions to ask your girlfriend?
Questions about what she hides, what she's tired of carrying and what she wants, such as "What are you tired of being strong about?" The Deep set has eight, each with a follow-up.
Are these good for a first date?
Most of them assume you already know each other. The Fun set works early on. Save About us and Deep until you've been together for a while.
What if she doesn't feel like talking?
Take her at her word for now and try a smaller question later, such as "What would make tonight easier?"
